so its basically eheim 2217(new) vs eheim 2229(used)

will be used in a 30 gal for now, and upgrade to a 80-90gal in the future. it would be the ONLY filter in the tank, nothing else.
I personally don't like the w/d eheims. Go with the classic, it is a much better filter.

how about a cascade canister they are cheap reliable and dependable I have had a 1000 on my 44 gallon for fifteen years and it keeps going

I've been running a 2217 for over a year on a 75, water is clear as glass and the fish are happy. Not much maintenance either. Very versatile too, you can use it as a polisher, workhorse mechanical filter, or even pack it full of bio media (although being a closed system, won't come close to being as effective as a w/d for bio, though).

It is very good for mechanical filtration, so much that when I turned a tank over to sand, it grabbed so much of the silt out of the water for the first 2 months that I had to clean it out every couple of weeks to keep the flow rate up. Great filter overall, you won't be disappointed.

I would strongly disagree there. The Classic line is a work horse, and much more reliable than the pro 2 filters.

This is exactly the experience of my LFS owner.

By the way I purchased a 2217 Saturday. My tank is a 90gal with a Wet Dry filter and cornerbox. I have additional media in the sum and the cornerbox skimmer. However, the wet dry was never enough to keep up with all the particulate matter from my 4 big fish. Hence the Eheim purchase.

Well 2 days later my water is crystal clear and I know the Eheim couldn't be well established as a bio filter. Definetly worth every penny.

If you have a good LFS that treats you right it's worth purchasing from them!
They will be there to help you more than anyone online can!

yea, sorry the eheim 2217 is $119, not 199.

i was kinda making second thoughts about it. but i think il go for bigal's 119 with free shipping. i really cant find any other place with a cheaper offer.

just replaced my Fluval 405 with a 2217............much better filter in my opinion, waaaaay more room for media! Flow rate is a little faster too. It was a snap to set up and priming was easy as pie!:)
