Another question - Do males have that red on the outer part of the claw when they are younger, or do they develop the red as they grow?

Usually see the coloured marking at around 2-3". Another sign is the males claws are usually 2times the size of females. eg Female adult claw 1" male adult claw 2 1/2".Hope this helps :)

I went back to the LFS yesterday to try and get a male now that I know what to look for. Looks like all the males were already snagged up:irked:.

How big do females get?

I can tell you what that is, and I'm sorry if it has been answered in the previous posts...didn't look.

That is a FEMALE Cherax Quadricarinatus!
They have great personality's, can be aggressive and like to hide a lot.
Make sure you get plenty of Oxygen into the water, throw some eggshells in for hardness, and they'll eat it as needed after they moult.
And they are sensitive to Nitrates.
Other that that, after she moults after eating some good food she should color up some. They also put on a striking bluish green color when scavaging at night.

Hey Angler, unlucky on the hunt for males .. if you were in the Uk i would send you a couple of my males for free np .. got a whole bunch.

Well most of my females are big mommas as there about the same size as the bigger males(8-9") maybe 1inch smaller due to having a naturally smaller claw but the females bodys are just as thick if not thicker.

I think maybe its due
to my main breeding female was caught wild and our breeding male was tank bred so the female mother seems to have the best genetics for size and the colouring is really vibrant blue unlike our males who have a more darker fading blue. oh and we just had a female yabbie about 6" kill a 6" male during the molt .. got 2 of the next best and put them in a 35g with alota hides but this female is super aggresive!

Everytime i come close to the tank she charges up with her claws pointing up at me ...

She also once hitched a ride on my 8" jag cichlid ... the jag stayed away from her afterwards :)

Sorry for the late reply. That has to be the greatest invert-related story I've heard.
