i dont want a wet/dry (too expensive for me at this moment) i wanted to get a canister but not sure which to get do you guys have any opinions on a good but modestly priced canister filter preferably one with a polishing pad so sand doesnt clog up. Must be a canister good for a high african cichlid load.

What combination of filtration works best for you

cascade 1500...cheap.
cascade 1200....cheap.

what size is the tank?

I have two Eheim 2217's on my 90g Munba tank, very please with the performance.

I suggest Rena canister filters. XP3 or XP4. I use them on all my aquariums, piranha, reef, and rift lake. You should also look into adding a powerfilter w/ bio-wheel along with a canister filter. Buy them online @ link above. Doc. fosters has good prices. Best power filter would be the emperor 400's. I have been using them for years and am very happy. Good luck!

ive got an emperor running and a top fin that came with the tank, was thinking about putting top fin into my 30 gallon corner angel tank and getting a canister so i can get some good mid level filtration

I love sponge fitlers personally but I also have alot of tanks so they make the most sense. I've used most brand of canisters just depends on your budget either scion or lexus.

ive also got a problem with my emperor it wont start up nicely like other HOBs it needs to be COMPLETELY overflowed in order to work properly ive tried cleaning it out by holding it upside down i a bucket and banging on it a little i think sand is still cloggin a bit should i take it apart and scrub it down

On my 90 I use 2 AC 110's and a large hydro pro 5 sponge filter that is hooked to a powerhead and UV sterilizer.
