what kind of filter do you use

Sponge filters are nice for breeding or keeping fry.. Sometimes emperors can have trouble starting, after a year or more, just clean it well and take out and put back the motor. Mine have been working for over 2 years non-stop.. My recommendations are 10-15 ghp being filtered per gallon. :)

I have 2x FX5's, 2x Eheim 2117's and a Penguin 400 on mine. My penguin gives me problems starting sometimes. Just give it a good cleaning and it should be fine. Never start it dry though. Always have it primed.

A good cleaning on your filter may or may not help. I have 2 large HOB filters on my 265 gallon Frontosa tank and no matter how much I clean them they won't stay running long. Probably doesn't help that the fronts are constantly scooping up sand and spitting it out when they get to the middle of the tank. It falls right past the filter inlets. I will be going with a couple Fluval FX5s instead.

I have a small salt tank with a penguin 150 on it and my twin spot goby likes to do the same thing with the sand. I'd say at least once a week my filter jams up because of the sand and I have to clean it. Jeff's right that a cleaning may not fix it. It depends on how damaged your impeller and motor are.

Wet drys are cheaper than canisters. Just get an old tank some acrylic sheets cut down and silicon. A pump and pvc and your golden...

My thoughts exactly, You can make your own wet dry for like 50 bucks!
