My buddy picked this up for free at a pet store chain because they didnt know what it was. It has grown over an inch in about a month(about 2.5" now). Any ideas? some kind of goby? Thanks

I went through this with my "Jade Goby" that isn't quite a Jade Goby. I haven't seen a sloppier taxonomic mess since terrestrial snails. Pictures are mislabeled, people entirely convinced that THEIR blahblah gudgoen is the genuine one and the others are wrong entirely. I actually gave up after a week of solidly pursuing an ID. I hope your search is a simpler one.

thats a mogurnda sand goby

If by mogurnda sand goby you mean mogurnda mogurnda, I'd disagree. The google search I did for 'mogurnda sand goby' brought up marbled sleepers, d. maculatus and other random gobies/gudgeons. And I've raised a mogurnda mogurnda, it's shape was more torpedo-like than tall.

Looks like a violet goby, emperor gudgeon, etc more than any mugurnda.

Is there an actual species that 'mugurnda sand goby' applies to or are most unidentified specimens just called that?

Its Empire Gudgeon (Hypseleotris compressa)
