I was out fishing today and I caught this fresh water fish that i've never seen before. Its around 7-8 inches, looks like a tilapia/sunfish/bluegill, but its really stalky. I'll compare him to a grouper of freshwater. Whenever i held him he would open up his mouth right away (not trying to bite but out of a natural instinct of something). He also had a big mouth for his size. Hes brownish but cant remember distinct characteristics. hes in my front pond and i will catch and take a picture of him tmrw. If anyone has any idea, please do not be afraid to post. Thanks, Brad-- ohh and if it helps I caught him by tampa, florida in a little creek.

largemouth bass?

Picture? Or number of fin rays. Centrarchids can usually be identified, or at least narrowed down by looking at its meristics, namely the number spiny rays.

Are you sure it isn't a grouper?

Its smaller then what i thought but just really thick. Cant really see in these pics really well. Its kinda of multi colored and when i saw him in the water he was brown and had thick black tiger stripe like lines. It has more of a tilapias build. Its not round like sunfish and brim.
