What kind of fish is this

Agree with Darth, they are Vieja regani.
Hope your tank is large, they can be quite aggressive.
I gave mine to a friend who put it in a 220 and it killed his much larger red devil and carpintus after it settled in. It liked to hide most of the day, and wreck havoc at dawn and dusk.

Regani are strange that way. I bought two from The Wet Spot a few years ago and they were quite peaceful in a mixed CA tank. More recently I purchased three regani "mojarra pinto" from Cichlid Connection and they are real nasty - always taking shots at anything that comes by. The only difference I can see is that the ones from Wet Spot lacked distinct spots on the side whereas the Cichlid Connection ones have very prominent spots and perhaps taller dorsal and anal fins.

Thanks for the anwsers, i just knew it was not argentea, i will tell my friend that they are regani... He has 5 of them at about 7-8 inches in a 140 g tank along with 2 blackbelt at about 8-9 inches and 3 synspilla about the same size and it seems to be going well, only minor fights now and then

Wow - he should consider himself lucky. All the blackbelts I've kept became too aggressive for a community like that, even in a 210 gallon tank.

My current black is peaceful so far,but every other one I've had or my dad had was a menace and they are know for it

I keep 3 blackbelts along with 3 vieja symp and 3 agrentea without problems in weird 220g. Off topic but do you guys usually have problems with blackbelts?

My first blackbelt was relatively mild mannered in a 210 gal mixed CA tank until it reached about 8". Then it became prone to suddenly biting anything that passed too close, especially at feeding time. The attacks were very fast and powerful (you could easily hear the smack of a bite). Every couple of weeks would see the sudden loss of an otherwise healthy and vigorous tank mate. At that point I traded the blackbelt and peace returned to the setup.

I tried another blackbelt in a community CA tank about a year later. Once it hit about 4" I could see that I'd be going down the same path as before. He went after anything that came near, and seemed to be getting bolder and more aggressive each week. I decided that it just wasn't worth the risk because, when it comes down to it, I'm not willing to keep just a single aggressive fish in the tank.

That said, lots of people report successfully keeping blackbelts in a community. I would have been one of those people before my first BB reached 8", so I'm not sure how many of the reports are based on fish that simply haven't grown into their aggression. Perhaps it depends on the origin or breeding line specific individuals come from. The two I had came from the same LFS, and I believe originated from the same breeding pair.
