As you can see, male usually have small spots on the gill plate and lower jaw, females don't.
Beside motaguense, there are 4 other species in the genus. (3 are often interchangeably called Jaguars in LFSs)
and there are a host of mutts made by amateurs interbreeding the species
dovii
friedrichsthali
managuensis
multifasciatus (AKA loisellii)
Within the species, there can be many location variants.
For example, a group from muddy turbid water may be more colorful than a variant from clear water.
They range from Panama in southern Central America, north into southern Mexico.
