What kind of fish should I get?

I know about calc's. Not sure I have had one. Do they have personality? Hmmmm. I'm thinking i'm thinking.
No. The tetras and SD's are mid water. My brain is pushing me towards a geo. I want a fish for the bottom that explores.

If you don't mind mixing continents you could go with a synodontis euruptus. Mine is very active and busy, one of the first to feed at the top with the danios, but normally hangs around the bottom/ structures. Very curious and nosy. Good in hard water.

There is life beyond cichlids. The Chalceus, for example, sounds great, assuming it's okay with your water.

I recently spent a couple years keeping and breeding Gymnogeophagus balzanii, a species I had admired for years without actually keeping them or seeing them kept. The dominant male, with his impressive headgear and gentle demeanour, was a cool fish, but...my tank is only 24 inches deep, and those fish were plastered to the bottom of it constantly. Never approached the surface, even when very hungry after a several-days-long fast. Food had to be one or right at the bottom.

They looked ridiculous. I can't imagine how much worse they would act and look in 30 inches of water. I'd try to remain aware of this when selecting a Geo or Gymno

Firemouths...plural...would look great; I love 'em. But they are more of a schooling type of cichlid, just don't look or act right when kept solo.

I like the Synodontis eupterus idea, always had great luck with them and love the look and the behaviour. It would definitely learn to get its share of food by whatever means necessary. :) They get hefty, and some folks have warned of aggressive behaviour, although I never saw that with mine.

Personally, I was not a fan. Tried them twice.
Both times they were skittish and boring.

Having said that, seen tanks with them where they were chill and nice to watch in a group.

I'll report after a while. Let you know how the fish works out. Jurupari can be a little skittish but I have really enjoyed them.
