Why are more and more of these types of threads comming up and we've given all the exact same answers more or less.
You should see some of the Portugese herp forums I sometimes go to, people look like a broken record:nilly:

Out of curiosity, why is it that dart frog people are so strict about only keeping the same species together? I know you are not supposed to mix but why is that?

My guesses are 1. Because they're pretty small and can be eaten easily. 2. They are toxic, not as toxic as in the wild but still toxic. 3. They're requirements are a bit different from most things people are asking them to be kept with? I right in any of 'em? lol

Nope not really... Well maybe. He is asking about mixing the different kinds of poison dart frogs. Mixing dart frogs is frowns upon in the dart frog world due to trying to keep the lines as pure as possible.

Hybrids are not considered a good thing with darts. The threads on mixing on PDF boards go on for page after page after page. Most mixed tanks result in some kinds of illness due to stress, bulling, etc. MOST people that have done any research on dart frogs will find that is one of the MAIN things NOT to do.

IMHO opinion once you get enough experience to be able to handle a mixed tank in the proper way you have learned enough and gotten enough respect for the PDF hobby to know why mixing is a bad idea...... Did that make sense?

okay, this makes sense. Thanks. Out of curiosity though, I see zoos mix them all the time and they do this with the panama golden frogs and stuff too. Is this just because they give them massive enclosures? how come they seem to get it to work?

I am not saying I want to try this but I am curious bout it.

+1 as i have never takin a whack at PDF before so i have done little research.

Most common speculation as to why zoos do it is for several reasons:

1. They have specialists that keep a close eye on all the frogs in the enclosure, making sure they are all healthy and taken care of.

2. The size of the enclosures that zoos are capable of creating are far outside the reach of all but the most dedicated private keepers, which allows the frogs to get away from each other.

3. Mixed habitats keep things a bit more interesting for those who come visit the zoo. This is also why sometimes for example frogs are kept with snakes - much more thrilling to see completely different animals co-existing in - hopefully - peace.
