There is a nature center in the same town I live in where they have a very large fish tank as well as many other tanks. The main display features a large gar, a bowfin, a few LG bass, a couple Crappie, a flathead cat, a Channel cat, and a carp.
The gar they have displayed I believe is a shortnose, but I have never seen one like this before. The body if the fish is almost completely black, and the pattern resembles that of a trop. The gar is around 3 feet in length.

I'm guessing either the spotted gar or the shortnose gar. If this is a sports center, these might be native to local waters instead of an lfs. I would like to know where this was and maybe I can get a better ID. If not, someone who actually deals with gar can help you.

Ok def a shortnose gar. I took a look at gars in my range maps and the shortnose is the only Minnesota species with a short "nose".

It looks like a short nose, very nice looking but it has a hybrid look as well

im almost 100% sure it's a shorty although i'm rusty on my gar ID's. and that's an amazing looking gar too!

Is your profile pic a Cuban gar with a bichir behind it making the gar look like it has spines?
