Lopis is not protected last I heard. I can definitely be wrong but the fish is not CITES or anything.

The only reason why I hear that C. Lopis is rare to find in the hobby is because of it's size and it looks plain compared to other Asian Knife Fish. But I don't know how their wild population is doing. They're not really mentioned in anything I've heard or read about.

looks like my mates juvie emperor CK, it's yet to get it's stripes...then again it does have slight rings unlike urs..

I just got 2 big Chitala lopis shipped (18 and 16 inches) and they are incredible. Took me a while to locate them and have them shipped but it finally happened. here are some pics of them taken after unpacking them and I think they look very similar to the fish that started this thread. So I will have to stick with Chitala lopis as the ID for now.

Thanks for the great pictures! Looking at the slope of the head of your fish, and also the fish that started this picture, it's looking more like the Chitala Lopis

i have one exactly like it at the petstore they call them brown knives but i looked it up and found out that they are called african knives at the petstore they said that they get up to 8-10 inches ive had 2 so far the first one died because of a heater malfunction:( but the other one is doing great
i feed him blood worms at night
he is always hiding

African brown Knives do not have a dorsal fin. If the fishes are in a Pet Store they are likely African Knives or Asian Black Knives (Notopterus notopterus).
