Where the gators are
So we might be gettin some at the LFS this week. They should be around 4-5 inches and for $15. So i want to get one. Not sure on what kind it will be but the plan is to put it in my 330 SA tank. 6x3 footprint

Stocking is:
13'' RTC
6'' Pictus cat
6" Oscar
2x 6'' Jurapari
7'' Flowerhorn
2x 8" Red bellied Pacu
5'' Rhino Pleco

In floating box to grow out
2'' RTC
4" RTCxTSN
4'' TSN

What kind of lungfish would work with these guys? I like the African but heard they could kill the RTC? But i kinda like the SA one too. Which ones do they sell small? Ill find out tomorrow but will a SA lungfish go with these guys? And whats their growth rate?

big cats and lungfish are not so good combos. comunity tank a sa lung will work in most cases. rtc+lung=spiggety style dinner for rtc.

i may try a tsn with a lung. i have a 16" sa lung right now and a 8" tsn. will see how it goes, but i am 98% sure the lung will be moved out when i move the big cat into the new tank that contains the lung now.

also from my exp you stock will soon be 1x 16" fat bellied rtc.

if you have an extra 120gal or 180gal you could have the lung on its own or with some other nonagressive sa fish.

quick as it my be it is nothing compared to a big cats growth rate. this is coming from personal exp. i have had the big cats grow over 20" in 5-6 months.

Alright but is there any chance that a SA lungfish would injure my RTC? To me its atleast worth a try as long as the RTC cant get hurt. I keep the RTC fed enough that he doesnt eat my other fish. And he wont go in there for ahwile because of his size he would be gone that night. Just once it gets bigger would that be alright?

Whats the growth rate on a SA Lungfish? The RTC might be in a pond before the lung is big enough to need the 330.

Yeah im familiar with the cats growth but not the Lungs. My RTC went from 1.5 inches this Jan to 13'' now. Nothing grows faster than a RTC.

kinda fast till around the 18" mark from what i have herd. mine is not done with the fast part. i would personally get the cats in a pond before you get the lung or have it in a different tank. do not put the lung with the cat or it will be eatten. my 16" sal is only as big around as my thumb maybe alittle more.

feeding your rtc alot to save smaller fish in the tank is bad for its health and not gonna stop the enevitable. cause it has to be hungry before you feed it or it would'nt eat. in that window fish will be lost. here is a pic of my exp with the heavy feeding to avoid tankmate consumption with a very very fast tankmate.

well i feed him a tilapia filet or a cup of shrimp a every night but he shares that with the pacus. I mean hes not over fed just not hungry enough to eat the others. I just started to keep convicts in there as feeders for them. Some guy keeps bringing them to the shop because his our breeding like crazy so i figured why not. Ive heard of others breeding them for the same purpose. But thats just so if he gets hungry hes got something to go after.

Wow didnt realize they where that small. It would be fine for awhile in my other tank then. Ill prolly start digging the pond after July 4th. So as long as the growth is not faster than an RTC then he'll be fine in my 60.

it will be fine in the 60gal for a long time. they are exteamly flexible and relitively inactive. i would actually not feel bad if my 16" sal was in a 55gal. hell i often have a hard time finding it in the 180gal amongst the amason swards..lol.. just don't risk it with the rtc if you really want to keep one long term. as i have said before most big cats don't have tankmates or friends just future snacks. also here is a pic of my sal at 2.5-3" and 8-10"
