What kind of Newt is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't put other newts in. They will get slaughtered, some "racist" characteristic of paddle tails. Nice newt though!

I was thinking about taking this guy back because he was sort of an impulse buy. But I may keep him cause hes all cute and goofy looking/acting.

I have him in a 10 gallon planted tank. My only concern is he might cause problems to the plants. Plus I got snails in there, but I have not seen him trying to kill or eat any of them. Originally I was going to add a few dwarf crayfish and keep it a planted tank. Do you guys think this type of tank is suitable for this guy?

He'll be fine in there but he may eat some snails. I had one who ate all the fish and snails in my tank. He died about a week later from a parasite I assume he got from the snails or fish.

Alot of people say they're aggressive but I have 2 in a 20 gallon tank and they're some of the most peaceful animals Ive ever seen.
heres a pic

Is that a crayfish behind them?

They are really aggressive, in a racist way, if I can remember, they only start their sadistic tendencies when in contact to other caudata. You might want to pump your pair of paddletails a little, they are fine but still a little thin.

I'm surprised they are living with a crayfish. You'd think there would be trouble mixing them. Also about having 2 of them in 1 tank, perhaps they are male/female.

-I'm not sure of the sex of them
-they leave the crayfish alone nor have they ever bothered it
-im not too sure why they look thin, maybe the angle? they both eat about 2-3 minnows a day =/
-yes, the 10 gallon will be fine

I would avoid any crayfish combo with newts. White clown minows is a possible compatible candidate after being put on a quarentine. Dont forget they need cold temps so make shure the ligthing doesant cause much heating of the water and they do need a land part, preferably with some clean moist soil, plants and hidding places, as some go true a terrestrial stage during whitch they cant live in the water.
