What kind of oscar is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Standard tiger O. It's common for them to have odd looking patterns and colors like this as a juvenile. As others have mentioned it won't stay like this. He does however look like he could be possibly VT with those elongated caudal, dorsal, and anal fins.

My lfs here in England sells them as 'map Oscars' and yeh they look like a regular tiger Oscar once they grow.

there are a few differnt kinds of astronatus species in south america, It could be one of those young? or maybe a hybrid?
I´ve seen many young oscars but never one quite as nice as that, hes really stunning

How did your Oscar die?

I'm not sure. It was really strange. I came home from class one day, fed him a few pellets which he ate like always (very enthusiastically) and a few hours later he was lying on the bottom of the tank, dead. I had an aro and some tin foil barbs that were just fine. This was before I found MFK and learned how to test for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, etc.
