I was just out paying a speeding ticket a couple towns over and remembered seeing jags, chocolate cichlids, and texas's in this fish store a couple buildings over last time I was there so I decided to stop in there. They had 2 jags left and the guy told me they'd had them for a couple of months. Last time I was in there they were only about 1.5" and the last two were about 3.5" and 3". The 3.5" one was mean as hell and looked average so I got the 3"er. He was real dark and then the guy bagged him up and he lost all of his color, I just got him home and put him in the tank and gets along fine with everybody but he turned like 95% black. He has has huge fins and almost no pattern right now other than dark black, he does have some yellow in his pattern but it doesn't start until half way vertically down his body. Hes not like any jag I have ever seen so I'm wondering if he is even a jag? Hes got dark red eyes and when he was at the store he had a lot of green in his face. I can't get a good picture of him and couldn't find any type of parachromis like him on google images. What could he possibly be? Maybe just a stressed out jag?

he kind of looks like this loisellei but hes still a lot darker and hes a good 3" so he should have colored up by now.

We really need a picture of your fish to try to ID.

can't get any good ones. Black fish black background, cloudy sandy water and a bad digital camera. I was hoping people would post some pictures of their parachromis or parachromis that look like what I described and I could match them up. I guess I'll have to wait for my GF to get her digital SLR.

sounds like a jag, they can be very, very dark when young, pissed off and stressed

Why would you get a parachromis with your current stocking levels?

they're all really small and I'm getting a 120-200g tank for Christmas.

good answer!

what is this family fued lol

jaguars change colors alot. If you look at a tank of jags the most dominant one will be different colored then the rest. i am not sure but i believe the darker thats means less dominant. So if you looking for the meanest jag or dominant he will be a different color but i am not sure if its darker or lighter
