You might be right cornbread^^ Although there were only 2 in the tank the really mean one was very light and had a dark pattern, the one I got is all dark and really nice.
I managed to trap him in the clay pot.. He didn't have a lot of fight in him though.. I wonder if its just because he's new to the tank or if hes in bad shape from the store.. Hes probably fine since hes been in the stores tank for at least 2 months.
I think so to but hes so dark. They had a normal looking jag in with him and the guy thought he was a JD. I should have just bought him for $2.99 but I didn't have the room for him so I let him know he was actually a jag lol. Got my guy for $5.99

That's a Jaguar, as said before. I got a couple of small 1 1/2"ers from Petsmart a few months ago and they looked just like that (colorwise) for about a month or so until they hit the 2" to 2 1/2" mark. Once they were nice and settled, they started to resemble the more traditional jag coloration you're looking for. Give it a little time.
yeah I bought 2 jags from petsmart for a dollar each, and they were the 2 that were in the "tri-spotted" cichlids tank (they had jumped the divider) and one was always smaller and much more beat up. He was completely black all the time and the other one was blkue and full of pattern. I gave the small one to my g/f for her 75 gallon and she said hes already colored up a whole bunch. Just give it like a few weeks and some getting used to
Definitely looks just like mine though when I got it at about 2-2.5 inches
basically you're all telling me I picked the ugly one lol :-/
the good looking one was a little bigger than I was looking for and he was really mean..
My 55g gets 1 cube of plankton 5 times a week(package says color enhancement) and some wardley cichlid flakes as their staple food. None of them like pellets all that much. I have some omega one and hikari gold that I give them once and a while but I usually don't feed it since it just goes to waste, but I still try. I also give beefheart(package says growth for small cichlids) 1-2 times a week. I don't like to feed it to them a lot though because I don't need them growing too fast since I don't have another tank to put them in yet. I read somewhere that tetra color bits is really good for bringing out the color in fish too so I picked up a small can for like $3 the other day and have been feeding that with my cichlid flake. I've been thinking about getting that 1/2lb of flake food from bigals for $4.. http://www.bigalsonline.com/StoreCa...ke_food?&query=flake+food&queryType=0&offset=
has anybody used it?
If I continue to feed them these foods should they all color up nicely as they grow or should I have some more foods in their diet?
Merry Xmas I hope you really do get a new tank...you'll need it shortly. Try to get a minimum of 180g, it's a 6' x 2' footprint, compared to the 6' x 18" of the typical 125g, 135g and the 150, it's awesome. 6" of real estate doesn't sound like a big deal but the reward is great.
As far as their diet, flake food will not sustain an adult fish. You need to wean them onto pellets. Not trying to dog you man, but you need to try and spend a little more money than Wardley brand fish food. Get them some New Life Spectrum pellets and I can almost guarantee they'll eat it if their current diet is Wardley. It has the nutrients and vitaments necessary for beautiful coloration and it will keep them strong and healthy. A high quality pellet should be their main diet, and for variety, you can mix in lots of other things such as frozen or freeze dried mysis or brine shrimp, krill, bloodworms etc. Live eartworms are one my fish' favorite treats.
