what kind of pleco is compatable with a royal?

No one will be able to give you an accurate answer to this. Period.

It depends on a few factors:

1) How long have you had your pleco?
2) How big is the tank?
3) How many different hiding places?
4) Luck.

I've had my L200 for 5 years now. About 2 years ago, I put in a Planiloricaria cryptodon (Spoonbill Whiptail Cat). This catfish wasn't even technically a "pleco". He was absolutely destroyed by the L200 in less than a month. Lights on, things were fine. Right after lights off, he beat him up routinely.

Once plecos get settled into their territory, that's it. I tried moving hideouts around, switching around the tank, etc.

Your best bet to house plecos together in harmony is add them at the same time, provide multiple hideouts, and pray. Some people succeed, some don't. I can tell you one thing, I've encountered some really bad attitude royals in my day. One specimen would attempt to "club" anything that entered its territory with its cactus like pec fins.

??? here my crew, royals with cactus. Rip fins here and there no big deal it happen theyre not all going to see eye to eye all day every day. OP you made the right choice by not adding another pleco because you "love" your royal and you dnt want anything to happen to it.

I'm glad to see other people with multiple plecos. Ive been watxhing my rotal closely to see about his temperment and i don't think He would get along with another pleco. Anytime another fish gets near his veggies He tried to fin them. So i think He would hurt another pleco. Thanks for the help everyone.

Same reason some people have piranhas and other fish together with no problems. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The one thing I will admit with plecos is there is a method.

-Add them all at once (or in close time frame)
-Give them lots of hiding places
-Give them lots of room
-Give them multiple feeding stations

You can do it. However, if you have one particularly aggressive species of pleco who's had a long time alone...watch out.
