Don't think it's a gold spot.
They're normally more expensive, deeper black in colour and have gold/yellow stripe at the tip of dorsal and tail fin and over their body.
I think you have a fairly common plec, which will grow to 12 inches.
I got one, a cool fish if you ask me!

Keep him well fed!

lol which common plec. they all grow to different sizes. darkness of the "background" colour depends on the substrate and mood of fish.. so.. mine is actually rather light, much like picture below. not all, in fact quite a lot dont have the gold dorsal tip not the tail. here is a picture of one almost identical other than difference in spot shape and size, which is completely random (to an extent) in this species.

o and rottbo, it will get bigger than 6", but planetcatfish isnt far off im afraid, it wont be as monster as the others. ive seen them bigger than 7.9", and personally ive had one die at 8.3 or 4 (cant remember which).

He was thinking of Gold nuggets, not gold spots.

This is without question a Glyptoperichthys Joselimaianus. Common is just a term for a basic coloration, that has no abnormal features such as color, sail, size or pattern.

common. thats an interesting word. yea like joefish has basically said, there are a lot of "commons", such as hypostomus punctatus, hypostomus plecostomus, glyptoperichthys gibbiceps etc etc... i believe whole heartedly it is a glyptoperichthys joselimaianus (and are commonly called gold spot plecs, given L numbers 001 and L022 before described by science). they seem to be sold as commons or incorrectly labelled as Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps quite a lot. On price, i think you did about right or quite good, my current one cost about 12 GBP. oh, by the way, your other one looks a lot like an adult liposarcus pardalis (or hypostomus pardalis) but im not 100% i'll have to have a look. funnily enough though, liposarcus pardalis is also sold as a "common pleco".
liposarcus pardalis is now pterygoplichthys pardalis.

ah i new it had changed, wasnt sure what from and what to though. like many its had quite a few synonyms. js302, im sorry, i misunderstood your post completely, your right it isnt any of the gold nuggets. i misread your post due to different useage of common names of plecos. they confuse me often, sorry.

Common names are difficult to use, since they are often different in different areas. The store I work at tranships many of its fish, and we get fish labeled completely off the wall wierd names, that are common aquarium fish.

anything to make you buy them. plecos get the raw end of every deal. common names are as bad as other fish, l numbers are messed up, even in there own aqualog series, things dont correspond, and some fish have been through scientific names like they do cucumbers and bloodworms. but im not going through all this again lol

Yo, just found this site...It rules :headbang2 !! Anyway, if someone can check out my avatar.
I have no idea what type he was, labeled as "large" pleco, Id also like to know if its normal for him to float like that right at the surface. Thanks a bunch...

2 more posts to go !!! :chillpill:
