What kind of sand?

lol. Yeah play sand is good. pool filter sand is good. etc etc..

Play sand I toss into a 18 gal tub and use a hose with a spray gun on it to get a nice pressurized stream goin. then as the sand is settling dump out the water to get all the fine particles out. Do this over and over for about 15min to 30 min or till the sand settles right away after stiring it up and you should be ok. you will most likley loose 30-50% of the sand you start with. But that is ok cause its all the little crap you want to get rid of.

Howdy,

I have playsand in my tank. No problems, zero mainenance with my Malaysian Trumpet Snails. I didn't even wash the sand since the residual clay works as plant fertilizer.

I have Pool Sand in my Tanks, the only problem with it is when the Rays "Kick-it-up", my two 2227 Ehiems Get Major Sand in the main Power Filter and Very week, I'm having to clean the sand out of the filters.

yeah. good thing to remember with a sand floor is you want to take your intakes of yourfilters at least 6" away from the floor so they don't suck up sand.
Personally I say sand only works well in tanks that use an overflow since the sand even if kicked up wont reach the top of the tank.

Pool filter sand is by far and away the best substrate, much better then play sand. Play sand compacts too much... I used 100 lbs for an 8'x2' tank and that was plenty....

I went and got 100lbs of pool filter sand today, and its about the amount I needed. It was much easier to clean than play sand, and I like the color better. Ill post pics of my setup in a few days when I finish w/ it
