POOL FILTER SAND!

Stays down, doesn't cloud, awesome color, no algae issues. I have a gold spot motoro in there and he doesn't mind it.

Another thing, sand is inert, whether you use natural sand or silica sand. If you have root feeders, you'll want to add some fertilizer tabs regularly.

isn't rock inert??? At any rate the tank was gonna have java fern and giant anubis anchored to the drift wood you see in the video with crypts being tucked in around the larger rocks. I have kept crypts with african cichlids, even veggie lovers like duboisi and they won't touch it. Once it started its runners going no one in the tank could move it, the cryps wrapped around the larger boulder bottoms in my tank. I'll have to start the tank with more plant friendly fish first then move to the big guys.

Yeah, it's also inert. That's why those planted tank substrates are so expensive. They use special substrates made up of all the essential nutrients and minerals plants need. Some plants like anubias and java fern pull their nutrients from the water column. Others like amazon swords for example, pull their nutrients from the substrate using the roots. If you have inert sand with no fertilizers, the plant will literally starve to death and wither away.

My cryps did well in a tank with no special substrate it was pea gravel from Home depot and only about 1/2" of it. they just wrapped the boulders and held on for dear life, lol.

Because they're not strictly root feeders. Depends on the plant :)

OK, So if I add anything beyond what I keep in terms of plants at the moment I will need fertilizer. I want to try to do some java moss, don't think that will care about fertilizer. I don't want to do any more sensitive plants in a tank that size because it would just be too much of a headache getting to them, its 30 inches deep after all so planting in the substrate involves me dangling upsidedown into the tank.
