All languages have a parent language. The farthest back they trace language is proto-indo-european. English is in the Germanic language family. People say it is/was a pidgin but it is definitely a full language now. When cultures/languages come into contact pidgins are formed. A lot of countries around the world have very similar language with their neighbors: Ukraine/russia, and spain/portugal to name a few. These languages are so similar they could be dialects rather than different languages. But sometimes religion, politics, identity (to name a few reasons) play a role in whether a language evolves or dies. Language is pretty interesting. It tells you a lot about humans and culture.
