thanks for the info. do you know where i could find an african lung (post a link possibly)? i may try a small one and grow it out...that way i could try gauging its aggressiveness before putting it in the larger tank.

Too bad you're not near me...the lfs down the street has a beautiful annectens for $40.

I've never really seen a distributor for lungfish. If there is a decent lfs near you I bet they wouldn't have a problem getting one for you.

very cool. i have an lfs in mind that would probably be as good a bet as any for getting me one ordered. what is their growth rate like? i know they get very large, but how fast? also what size are they typically available in the hobby?

Ive had an African for a while now, and they are very 'jumpy' growers in my experience. they may gain a few inch in a short period then go months without gaining much length.

Mine lives with a Severum and an Oscar (i was told he was a SAL when i bought him so i added him to my SA set up) and has been fine.

I wouldnt mix gars with them though. My gar was two thirds his length and it only lasted one day.

They are good with heavy build fish, such as an oscar, since the fish isnt going to nip the lung but the lung will find it hard to take out the tankmate.

Thats just what ive experienced though.

In MA, I tend to see them around the 8-10" mark...that was how big my guy was when I got him.

As far as growth...FAST!! :D My guys is a couple years old and he's touching the 3 foot mark and litteraly 3.5" thick...he's a beast.

ok...let's forget about the WAL for now. how about the SA Lungs? ive heard they do well with tankmates. can any of you vouch for this? are they as readily available as the WAL?

in a sense, you really can't gauge an african lung's aggressiveness, even if they've lived fine with tankmates for a long time, because they can turn on their tankmates just like that, with no warning, and no reason. Sadly, due to their powerful bite and powerful crushing jaw, the victim usually dies after just one attack.

While some have been able to keep their african lung with other fish, they're so unpredictable that it's always a risk, and not something you wanna put with fish you mind losing.

btw, WAL is Protopterus annectens. African Marble lung is Protopterus aethiopicus (and the subspecies more common in the US seems to be Protopterus aethiopicus congicus).

and yes there's only one species of South American lung. they are quite readily available as well. and they mostly do well with other tankmates (and you should not need to worry if tankmates are of similar size). But do make sure the tankmates aren't aggressive either. If you're wondering why i said 'mostly', i'll put some pics up and you'll see.

i think my SAL is just the exception, and for the record, it did live with the bichirs for a long time, but this just goes to show that it isn't entirely foolproof, at least when keeping with smaller bottom dwelling tankmates. On the flip side, you wanna make sure you don't keep the SAL with aggressive or nippy fish. e.g. mine had a large section of its tail bitten off once by either a jardini or giant gourami.

Anyway if you keep the SAL with similarly sized fish, it should be worry-free. And i've seen it work with smaller tankmates as well. you asked if anyone can vouch for this, i'm afraid i can't speaking from my own experience. But generally speaking, i think it should be fine keeping the above in mind.

Anyway, previous to this incidence, my SAL bit the pectoral fin of two of my lapradeis, about half its size in length. in one case, it tore the pectoral all the way to the fleshy part.

But the last straw was this (see pics). the buettikoferi is a few inches smaller than the lapradeis, so it's definitely less than half the length of the SAL. Mass-wise, of course it's even smaller in comparison.

thanks for the info. that sux that your lungfish tore your bichirs up like that. i'm going ot have to do some thinking now.

does anyone else have any hands on experience with SAL's? please share your info with me.

thanks again,
