What makes a fish desirable?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The thing I like about fishkeeping in general is that there is a little bit of a lot of aspects of science to it. Biology, chemistry, engineering... Does that make me a geek?

Nah, the fact that I can name every episode from the original "Star Trek" and I can write code does.

No to keeping fish for the above reasons. But you blew it by professing to be a "trekkie" My Geek Detector just went off! ;)

There are several things that draw me to a fish:

1. Interesting color pattern (I'm crazy about fish with contrasting black and white patterns)
2. Interesting behavior (I love predators that swallow other fish whole)
3. Is it something completely different that I have never seen before (this is a bigtime draw)
3. Is it a catfish (I have a special love of catfish in general)
4. Is it a shark (another love of mine, hence blacktip)

Some things that don't motivate me are:
1. Where are the fish from (I know this is important to some people)
2. Is it from a particular family or group of fish

Geek alert!

One thing that apparently makes a fish desirable is being told you can't have it.

Boy ain't that the truth. My wife used to think asian aros were okay, but as soon as I told her we weren't allowed to have them here in the states, she went apenuts for them. Everytime she sees a picture of one, I have to listen to her whining about how bad she wants one.

Large size, high activity level, "personality", and they must have a hearty appetite!
