Just what the title says. I've noticed that although this Monster fish keepers not all that many posts are, in my opinion, true aquatic monster monsters. (Not that there is any problem with non monster fish and I am very guilty of posting about some non monsters from my own scale).

My question is, what makes a fish monster?

For me it boils down to 4 things: Size, Appearance, Temperment, and weird factor. I have my own scale from 0 -10 and if a fish scores above 6 in 3, 8 in 2, or 9-10 in one (depending on other scores) I'd call it a monster (or mini monster if size is miniscule)

I guess everyone would have a different opinion on this, but for me it would be attitude, appearance, size, and the size of the tank they call home.

If you had a 12000G tank full of guppies that would still be a monster fish tank.

Any fish owned by a monster fishkeeper. Many people on this forum (there are a lot of threads on this) define "monster" as being about passion and fishkeeping. So if you are passionate about fishkeeping, then your fish are monster fish.

The Welcome Page to MFK states:
"We are a unique community of Fish Keepers who seriously take our hobby to extremes and the NEXT level. The majority of our fish collections include RARE & EXOTIC Species of all sizes, BIG FISH with BIG APPETITES and BIG TANKS. It's not easy for most people or other "regular" fish keepers to understand why we maintain this type of collection and spare no expense on this fascinating hobby."

Those who take the hobby to the extreme/next level or keep big fish with big appetites in big tanks would define monster in those terms. All other fishkeepers will define "monster" as being solely about passion. So by definition of "monster", every fish owned by every member of MFK is a monster fish.

It is all about how you feel.

Well compared to a neon tetra an adult severum can be considered monster! A tank thats 180 gallons can be monster compared to a 10 gallon tank. I think it all comes down to how you look at it. Of coarse the real monsters are cichla, aros, rays etc.

Which one is the monster?

Well lets cut out the b s and define really what a monster is ,iam also well aware that most of you already know what makes a monster fish ,but somehow feel oblige to keep it a secret for fear that somehow you will not feel the same about being on the monster fish website considering your stock ,well its just too bad and definitely will not make a monster any less than what it is ,, Size makes a monster no more no less, that being said, aint nothing wrong with keeping small fish its all part of the hobby ,but please do not call them monsters,,,
