What makes it a Flowerhorn and not Just a Misc. Hybrid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like that.

Also the SRT/RT was brought up as well the fortune fish. They are similar to a flowerhorn but not a flowerhorn but a hybrid thats been adopted by the flowerhorn hobby.

SRT - they typically are all yellow/orange some have the 50/50 coloring like a flowerhorn. Since they are based on texas blood the fish is longer, thiner, and has a longer nose/face. The pearls are mainly white and sand pearls are preferred over worms.

Fortune fish - they are more like a fork in the flowerhorn line and have a wide variety of colors and not the typical 50/50 red to yellow. They also have big fan tails where the top and bottom fins almost touch to look like one big fin on the back of the fish. Fortune Fish are known to grow slow and take years to mature while a flowerhorn can put on an 1"+ a month in the right conditions. FF also are not known for their KOK and typically have a hard KOK over a water KOK

I believe most of the info you seek is posted sticky bro not that hard to find

Yes, this thread is from the "newbie forum" Some Traits of ZZ and Kamfa

MFK is pushing the hybrid market with the new add campaign in TFH. Would seem about time to get some subforums with stickys in the Hybrid forum. I just hate having to go elsewhere to gain info:irked:

Is that why they call it a variant of FH?

Bderick67 I think you are right and do have a good idea about MFK now needing to add some sub forums to the hybrid forum here. Something I would like to see here a long with maybe a sub forum for the four major Fh groups. Also one for all SRT/or RT, Fourtune fish, and one for all other hybrids. Also would be nice to see one for show casing U.S. Breed flowerhorn & or hybrids as well (this would be a first even the major FH boards do not have this one yet).;)

if they are in fact doing this. yes, i would recommend getting some stickies here. there has been numerous threads that could already go up there.

as for the original questions. i think danz has summed that up pretty nice for everyone. i will add i tiny bit.

if a person is a flowerhorn hobbiest then that person should easily be able to tell a flowerhorn from the rest. also anyone the dabbles in crossing fish, usually a 2 way cross, does not throw out such great looking results without linebreeding or inbreeding, that would resemble todays standards of flowerhorns. this is including a trimac X "pure" whatever.

also keep in mind that anything you cross with a flowerhorn, the result of the breeding is still a flowerhorn. different formulas make different flowerhorns.

as stated before SRT and FF/RBK/KKP/BP, and among others are recognized as respected hybrids within the flowerhorn community.

Its nice to see the hybrid forum evolving here and see MFK is going for it. I am the admin for flowerhorncraze.com and we are always willing to share our info to spread the awareness of hybrids and flowerhorns.

A Flowerhorn is a hybrid, this is a fact.
But, not all hybrids are flowerhorns. Flowerhorns come from the original Louhan fish. The Louhan was made from 4 fish. The Midas, Vieja, KKP, and Trimac. From this fish descended the different strains of flowerhorns through further breeding with pure strains into ZZ, GM, Kamfa, and JK. This type of breeding to create stable strains takes years. For a very detailed explanation of the GM strain go to Flowerhornrus.com, the GM section, and read the pinned post on GM-->KML,SML ?

Thanks,
Ed
