don't ya'all think it's ironic,... the genius performer is our least respected. goldfish?
I'd like to see any 'popular' cichlid trained like that.
;-)
Which ones do you think would be most likely to make it thru boot camp?

I was never too impressed with my fish IQwise, until...
my group of cories ganged up on my little deep sea diver bubble ornament, removed the helmet, scavenged the air hose, and used it to make a ACTUAL aqualung.
they were coming out and exploring the house, leaving little trails of water everywhere.
Lol. ya painted a good picture there.

My fish is pretty stupid. Pavlovian psychology says that an reasonably intelligent creature will associate a stimulus with food, once the creature is exposed to the stimulus-food combination enough times.
It took my P.Nattereri over 5 years to realize that I am the bringer of food and good times. For the first 5 years, it would panic and swim away as soon as it saw me and would not eat until I left the room.
can't expect shoaling fish to just lose their inherent instinct for what is "safe".
in the wild, brief hunger is better than imminent death.

I have noticed that true parrots are by far one of the most intelligent fish in the hobby. They just do things that other fish don't do like greet you in the morning or stare at you.

What kind of synodontus is it? My syn cat also hides, but every time I drop rehydrated earth worms in the tank, he will come out behind his rock, get a couple and swim back...

This is what I usually see of "Miss Kitty":
