What media to put in an emperor 400?

I use Eheim Substrat Pro in all of mine.

The substrat pro in my lfs is expensive as hell. Well I haven't checked others so I guess I'll do that when I get free time. I put sponges on the other one and probably put substrat pro in the other.

Are ceramic rings as good as the substrat pro? Cause they're cheaper. If not then I'll get eheim.

Substrat Pro is the best but really pricy. You can fit quite a bit in those baskets compared to ceramic rings. To be honest though it all depends on your stocking. If you have 10 small tetras and use a litre of substrat pro it would be wasteful/useless because you wouldn't be able to grow enough good bacteria to colonize all that surface area! The amount of bacteria you can grow on a given bio-media depends on the waste your fish produce to feed them. If you buy substrat pro look online it's cheaper. Check out Amazon they have free shipping.

If you want to save cash just get some ceramic media like F1 VET said or some matrix. They all work fine and to be honest I don't really notice much difference in water quality between brands/styles of bio-media.

Nothing replaces proper stocking and a good water change routine.

Substrat Pro is the best
maybe, maybe not.

there's matrix, and pond matrix. pond matrix is designed to work in higher flow rates although it should work even better in slower flow situations. Seachem recommends matrix for canister filters, and it's smaller so you can fit more in so even more surface area than if you were to run pond matrix.
