suggestions needed please
I noticed about 5 days ago my 9inch oscar had a soar on or next to her nostral hole, the soar is not a hole, it sorta purtrudes out a bit.
it has gotten worse over the past few days.
What types of meds should I use to treat it?
I was not sure if metronidazole?? or something else was right
I attached a picture.
She is in a 125 gallon tank.

thanks so much for your time and advice

No metro. What other fish do you have in the tank?

Separate the fish in a barebottom hospital tank and dose a teaspoon per gallon of sodium chloride. Apply iodine solution or betadine on the sore with a cotton ball for 2-3 consecutive days or swab ONLY ONCE with hydrogen peroxide.

Be careful not to let iodine or HP seep to the eyes, gills and mouth.

oh wow, I need to swab it w/ a cotton ball. she is not going to like that.
I assume she will overcome the stress of being touched, how will the meds help if she is put right back into the water?

I have had her just over 4 years. she is kinda special ;)

in the tank I have 2 red hook silver dollars, 1 small geo, 1 lrg pleco, 3 severums, 1 fish in the green terror family and a flag tail.

thanks for your time and suggestion.

Both topical and salt will prevent bacteria from infiltrating the bloodstreams that could result in internal infections.

Thanks again.

After he is better, if I salt my tank a little heavy will that be ok w/ the other fish I have in there? just to be sure this goes away completely.

what measurements/amounts would u suggest a good but slightly heavy salting my tank be?
I have my notes at home for the standard regular salting amount

u have been a huge help. :headbang2 :headbang2

How heavy were you planning to dose? All she needs is 1-2 teaspoons per gallon and be sure to add a teaspoon per gallon every 12 hours so for 2 teaspoons per gallon total, you have to do two sets in 24 hours.

It is. Table salt or rock salt is fine. The only additive to watch out for is yellow prussiate. I wouldn't worry about the iodine content.

I have a general salt question: I have seen conflicting info online.
In a happy, cycled tank does the salt need to be replenished after 3 weeks?
or
Replace only the amount taken from the tank during a water change, the salt stays in the tank and does not evaporate, get old or go away.

to answer you question about salting the tank heavy:
my thought was once the oscar is healed and added back to the big tank 'a little extra salt' would help him get back on his feet (fins) and feeling 100% again. I did some extra reading I don't think that is a good idea.... unless you suggest other wise.

Thanks :headbang2

Salt won't leave the system unless you take it out. Water will evaporate, but that just increases the salt concentration in the remaining water. Once you get the concentration you are going for, only re-add an appropriate amount when you do water changes.

Not sure on keeping salt in the main tank. Most fish will benefit from a little salt (Promotes slime coat forming, etc), but I don't know the effects on all of the fish you listed so I don't want to say anything definite.
