What oddball or rare fish should I get? (freshwater)

Ok so I know it's "monster" fishkeepers and we have our share of monsters in puffers & bichers but my wife also has a lot of 30 gallons. Of course it depends on what you like but apistogrammas are good - nice color and easy to care for. Ever try shellies - shell dwelling like the Brevis? And, certainly not monster fish but endlers come in some amazing color varities and designs and all of these can be housed together along with live plants. Hey- just thoughts!

Brown ghost knife fish is a definite oddball, doesn't grow as large as the black.

a 30 gallon dosent even make a decent grow out for a pima or an aro

Freshwater Lion Fish, and yes they are full fresh water, Had one for a long time who loved his guppies.

As mentioned not that many for a 30g but you could do a south amarican dwarf cichlid.

Thanks everyone sorry for the extremely late reply. I ended up getting a African Butterfly and a Synodontis Petricola. I was really happy that I got the petricola when I because I paid 15 for the little guy and shortly after that they went up to 17. I think the last one the lfs had was priced at 20.
