I would like to get some pretty hardy beginners plants for my tank but I am not sure on what to get, what have you guys had success with and what should I avoid. I have a 29 gallon freshwater tank with about an inch of pretty big gravel substrate. For fish I have an angelfish, 3 glass catfish, a pleco, a pictus, and 3 cory cats. My water is more on the hard side and has a pH of 7.6.

Java fern MATS. You can get two of them, cut then in half and they'll line the entire back of your tank. Then get a potted anubius for the center.

if you have driftwood or lava rock, try attaching anubias or java fern species. mosses are also easy, marimo balls can be added to just about any tank

This is two halves of one java fern mat, that I cut in half. I think the mat came as 5" x4". The "mat" means that they're rooted on a cocoa mat. For reference, the GT and JD are each about 2.5". The pleco on top is about 6" and the bottom pleco is about 8".

This is another half of a Java fern mat on the other side of the tank. I just realized that I should've taken a shot of the anubius in the center of the tank, they're in my previous posts somewhere. The only anubius left standing in this tank as of today is the one that was potted.

Here's the kicker: you see how healthy they look. They've been under 3 20W zenon puck lights like these for the past three weeks ;).

^ The little plant to the right on the second picture is some kind of sword plant (it's been in there so long that I forgot the name lol). That thing will not die. I also should've snapped a picture of the potted ANUBIUS NANA<---- THAT is what you should put in the center! It is also something that has been really hard for me to screw up lol.

Okay, I had to go back down to the man cave to get a shot of the nana. This thing has been under just one of those measly 20W zenon bulbs for like 5 or 6 months. It doesn't grow much - if at all - but it is still alive. (The boss had to get himself in the pic too :lol2:)

Whatever you do, get PLANTS and not stems. A lot of LFS will sell bunches of horn wort stems rubber-banded together. Those things just suck. You'll find them floating at the top of the tank everyday (I actually learned this from my 29G). They're messy too and you'll find yourself buying new ones every week to replace dead ones.

It's funny, I can grow enough tomatoes in the back yard to feed the whole town.. but in a tank full of.. ahem.. WATER, the only ones I've had luck with in my low light setup are the ones in my pictures.

^depends on the light I guess, but yes, the java fern grows when everything else doesn't.

I actually have two really good LFS near me so I don't get much online. But if I did have to get plants from the net, it would be here http://substratesource.com/

If I would've moved the camera to the right two inches on that last picture you would've seen a couple of fat cory cats
