Yeah, I don't know about other plants but pothos need just ambient light. Better light might help them grow better (and therefore use more nitrates), but ambient room light will at least keep them alive and healthy. If you are going to put them in your sump I would get some sort of light down there. I don't know if you looked at the thread I linked for you (doesn't matter either way), but you could also build a planter shelf (which I plan to do) with plastic egg crate and put it in the tank. Then you don't need to add lights, but obviously you would have the roots hanging in the water. I kind of like it so far, but we'll see what I think long term. It is just personal preference.
