These small fish have big character :)

Do you know if they hold their own in a tank with larger fish?
 
Yup definately Ancistrus. They don't get massive, but what you mean hold their own? In a community set up they are fine.

I was wondering whether I'd have to avoid putting them with African cichlids, or with fish that generally grow beyond 8" , for example. So I guess the answer is yes, avoid that.
 
i wouldnt put it with cichlids.....i once had a oscar around 15cm that ate my bristlenose that was 10cm
 
Bristlenose for sure.

Not a fish to mix with large agressive cichlids. But fine in a semi agressive tank. Mine live with Tiger barbs and Kribensis cichlids fine.

But an adult Oscar would eat one whole, and many Africans would pick one to bits and eat the leftovers.

I keep them with young electric yellow but that's not a hard thing to do.

or a frozen bloodworm cube or a finger LOL

I even once saw an oscar take a cigarette butt (alcohol and stupidity were involved :irked:)
