What poly species did I buy today..?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Will it blend...?

Today I tried some sushi-grade salmon and a maggot. NO to the maggot, I do think he ate 2 small pieces of salmon. I'll leave the other 2 pieces of salmon in tonight if needed, will do a large water change tomorrow anyway.

Tomorrow I'll pick up an order of some pangasius and nile perch, and will pick up some live buffalo worms too.

That fish eats better than me  or would, if he ATE normally already :(

Did you pick up the pangasius and Nile perch? Hows the poly eating? Any pellets yet?

Would avoid feeding salmon regularly due to the high fat content. Congratulations on the new friend :)

They didn't have the nile perch after all. The pangasius: not even a nibble. So I ate the rest ;)

The live buffalo worms didn't interest him at all either (too small perhaps).

Salmon and mussels is all he'll eat for now (if only a little). I tried the pellets twice again, but no.

I don't like feeding salmon, it makes the water greasy and it's expensive too. So he won't be getting that often...

He sure is cute and all, but he is annoying me no end with this food-strike thing

Woah yup definitely Delhezi hybrid. Head shape is just right. It's probably crossed with another upper-jaw species judging from the jaw lenght. In the previous pictures it also seems to have well developed neck muscles, despite being rather skinny, which is also typical of delhezi.

Figuring out the other half is trickier. Is it as brown as in the pictures? I can only think of a few brown upper jaw species, and the ones with few dorsal finlets are pretty much excluded. I suppose that leaves P. Palmas Buettikoferi, P. Weeksii, P Retropinnis, and possibly Teugelsi or Mokelembembe. Maaaaybe Senegalus.

I think you can be pretty confident that it's a Delhezi x something at least. Might even be a purebred del with unusual colors. Do post some more pics once it fattens up and settles in.

I totally forgot about this thread.

So, update after almost 3 years:
This fish has been a ***** to feed. He would only take the occasional feeder fish which I don't usually feed, and was taking a turn for the worse. Getting thinner and lethargic.

However:
This February while shopping for feeders I saw a display of hikari and thought, why not, I've tried all other brands... Tried hikari sinking carnivore pellets. He left them for 3 days, then tried one and now Boom he's begging for them every night. He's looking healthy as a horse now and is way more active.
Yay!

Still no clue as to what he is exactly, but he hasn't grown in almost 3 years. He still is in a separate tank, don't trust him with my Congo predator tank fish...
I did look for a good home for him a few times, but no one wants him cause he's not a purebred... Financially I should let him and the extra tank go, but. He's. So. Darn. Cute. <shrug>

Anyway here are some new pics :

Surprised I never saw this - what a lovely fish! Glad they're eating!

Is it normal for them to be that gray? I could have mistook him for a senegal in that last picture if it wasn’t for the head shape.

It's a suspected hybrid
