whats your favorite brand and stlye of pump?
i am lookin for one that will pump close to 1500 gph and i will have 2 on my new 240 gal
so lets hear what you prefere
maybe a poll should be added? i would have done it but idk all the common brands. maybe someone could help me put one together?
i have had all rios so far and they seem great but i am new to the hobby and dont have years of experience so i cant really say they are a reliable pump for more than 1 year
If you want 2 x 1,500gph, just get a Reeflo Dart. Better pumps and move a ton of water very efficiently. They are much cheaper than all the normal pumps when it comes to moving lots of water.
I have an MD55 and MD70. Both have been giving flawless performance for over 12 years, most of that time in saltwater setups. The MD55 has been run dry on numerous occasions, but still works as good as new.
Iwaki is the #1 pump in public aquaria as well (according to an aquarist I talked to at the Oregon Coast Aquarium).
I find smaller pumps are more efficient than large ones.
Watt per GPH is what I look at.
For example a 1,500 gph may take 150watts to run but two 750gph pumps take a combined 100watts to run. The 2 smaller pumps will only use 2/3 the power and move the same amount of water.

They may have a higher stated flow at 0' head, but you will find the max head height tends to be lower on the smaller pumps. Smaller pumps like powerheads are only efficient with little or no head height/restriction.
A lot of people don't realize how dramatically the flow will drop off with back-pressure.
