your to quick, but thats good.
i figured 4 would be too much. n i am realisticly shooting for close to 10x turn over. my 120 has about 1000 gph on it and it stays crystal clear. so do you think i could do like 2000 gph and it still stay crispy as some would say?
oh and whats the diff between external pumps and submersables?

2,000gph would still be plenty, at least in my opinion.

Nothing really different, they both pump water. All of my Quiet One and ViaAqua pumps can be used either submersed or externally. Some can only be used one way or the other, so keep that in mind. Typically external only pumps are larger and submersible only are smaller, ones that do both tend to be middle sized.

And like Pharaoh said if plumbed right an external pump shouldn't leak but I just prefer to eliminate that possibility by running them in the sump. ;)

If you plumb it right, there won't be any water on the floor with an external pump.

I agree, but failures do happen. I placed all of my plumbing directly over the opening on my sump, so if there ever was a failure it would all fall back into the sump. I haven't had a leak yet, but I'm sure it will happen at some point.

Agreed.

thanks everyone for the help.
i found a guy selling a mag 9.5 and a mag 18 i offered her 100 for both so if i get those it should be pushing about 1700 gph at 6ft. i think that will do.
now i have a delema. the same guy offered me a 3ftx17x17 sump with both pumps for 250 but it has no wet dry tower its just a basic sump. or i can buy my friends 4ft sump that is only about 12 inches tall by 12 wide but it has a large drip tray and wet dry tower and comes with the overflow box also with no pump.
so if i got my friends i have to buy the pumps or if i buy the guys i have to buy an overflow box or drill my tank and i wont have a wetdry area..... decisions
what would you do?

anyone?

My next sump will be DIY so it is exactly how I want it. You can make an overflo using PVC and bypass the overflo box completely. Check out the DIY section for examples and ideas. $100 for those pumps sounds like a pretty good deal. Can you buy those pumps and your buddy's sump? If you get those, just make a PVC overflo and you are good to go.

well i calculated it and the 3ft sump can handle more water volume. so i think thats a safe bet and i am goin to just drill it so it comes out to 600 for tank stand lids sump pumps and drilling and pipes. that not bad :) for a 240 gal tank
