What pumps do you guys use for your sump?

Just curious ;)

I use 2 x Eheim compact 5000's (5000 l/h). Their power is great for their size, their price was great for the power, so is the little dial to choose how much you want them to pump but they are very noisy for such a small pump and considering the hype Eheim gear gets about how quiet they are. Eheim dropped the ball on this one. I managed to dull them with "cages" I made by siliconing some extra foam I had together to try and dampen the noise. The sump is also surrounded by polystyrene on the three sides it touches the stand (bottom, back & side) to try and aid in noise reduction.

I would swap them out in a heart beat for New-Jet pumps if I was able, like the adjustable 3000 l/h one I use for my water changes. Very quiet, even used outside the water in a plastix tub (to keep it off the carpet while it is running).

I typically use

Quiet Ones - Pretty Quiet. Never had any problems out of them, except for a couple used ones I picked up.
Mag Drives - They work well, but are noticeably louder than quiet ones. Not as efficient at the higher flow rates either.
Reeflo - Great pumps, solid reliability and are really quiet for 3,500-4,500 gph pumps
Gen-X - Loudest pump I think I've ever used. The hum that these thing create is crazy. I could hear it upstairs like it was sitting right next to me.

There is a new pump in the market, made by tunze they very quiet an efficient, also small foot print, check them out i really recommend these pumps, Tunze slilente recirculation pump, also made by sicce silent, i believe its the same pump. There is a video on you tube call sicce silent, comparing them with mag pumps. This pumps are much better then eheim compact.

Awesome thread...right now in my DIY sump i got a AC 300GPH power head... college student budget and my first DIY flow isnt a bit more than a trickle but its made from spare parts and part of a python tube...
