What ray would u recommend.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is a very responsible decision, but I honestly think you will be good with two hystix in the 180 for life... And they can live a few months in the 90 if you get the at around 6", dont over feed, and do two 30% water changes a week... Hystrix rays are truely the smallest, retics get bigger than hystrix.. Also males in any species are smaller than females, therefore if you get a male hystrix it will stay around 12", and take 2 years to get there!!!

Firstly.... Respect for you making a tough decision...

However, I am also a responsible fish keeper and hate seeing fish mistreated or squashed etc, but I believe that if you have a typical 180 @ 6x2x2 then a hystrix will be fine, they do not get big at all, I would probably not get any ther bottom dwellers so they can have the floor to themselves, then just get some nice middle n top swimmers.

There will always be somebody that tells you that you need a 1000g tank for a Oscar and 50 fx5's but in reality you can generally judge if a fish is too big for is tank. Again I applaud you for accepting that a fish is too big for your tank, which is something too many people don't do, hence you see oscars in 2ft tanks etc, I just feel like you may have been a bit rash

I have my retic in a 210 for almost 2 years and he still has aton of space. I think the 180 and the 210 has the same LxW but the 210s just taller. Two histrix I think would be fine but like sam said thires always people that will blow size out of proportion. most likely when you get rays they will be pups to the size to fit in your hand.

I'm with the above...... I think a 180 is enough for the right rays. I have a pair of Marbles I've had here for 5 years, and they're in a 2' wide tank. I had them in 4 wide and it seemed pointless as the bigger rays intimidated them so they were moved back to their own "midget" tank.

I'd hate to see someone go without rays cause they wanted to make the responsible decision that was based off of what again? Many people here don't exactly practice what they preach. Many see a "plan to upgrade in the future" as an excuse to throw their own advice out the window and do what they want.

I'm no expert, but I do have experience, and living proof, that if you're careful about what you get there's no reason a 180 won't work. Besides how many of us started with rays in something smaller? Probably a lot more then are going to be honest about it. ;)

A 180 is a gateway tank. Set it up, put a ray in it, and let nature take its course. That 180 will make you a nice sump someday.

Try to find some mini marbles there great a bit better looking in my opinion to hystrix but each to their own my male mini marble is 4 years old and only about 10inch disc he was in a 6x2 but I had to upgrade for wanting more rays and I have other types now.
