What rays for a new 102"x32"x28"high?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi Steve, 32" wide will be fine for most species apart from some of the bigger species like flowers and tigers.
Alot of black ray owners tanks arent wider than that. Same width as my tank. Personnally I would try and get a couple of leo's. Second choice would be pearls or marble motoro's. In this country currently pearls and leo's are pretty affordable. With a tank that size you can house pretty much any ray for life so choice is endless. They really arent that hard, your discus will be more demanding and so will a tig. Black rays seem to be hardier than brown rays in my experience. If you went for standard motoro's I cant help but feel you'll be wanting something nicer soon after. Hope this helps and whatever you decide on PM me and i'll have word with couple of mates ;-)

Hi Steve my gars grew to about 12" and then I traded them as they started to nibble the rays. I agree with Jake and you should be ok but if you go for a motoro try and get a marble one as not only are they nicer, they tend to stay smaller. If you can afford it then go for some pearls or black rays... the choice is yours. Good luck :)

Cheers for the replies,im only in the research stage at the moment so wont be having any yet.
How much would the blacks be in the uk because i like the look of those, also kolossus mentioned altering tankmates, which ones wouldnt be suitable?

If you are intending to put all of your current polys in the ray tank, you stand the chance of some disc nips. However, I often mix things that generally would not work...In my experience, it really depends on individual fish. I've had some polys that were nippers, and some that weren't. So you will just have to watch closely. Also, depending on the size of the future rays and the size of your angels and/or discus, there are possible conflicts. In other words, I'm just saying make sure your size ratios work for you (i.e. no huge rays and small angels/discus as they may become food or expensive chew toys) and be careful mixing other bottom dwellers that could pose problems for the rays.

Cheers kolossus, the rays wouldnt be going in with the discus,as for the polys i was worried the rays would eat them not the polys nipping the rays but ive learned something new.

Cheers steve
