...I guess my question is, when will people learn?

They won't.

People in general are a very stupid animal. The dumber a person actually is, the less likely they will acknowlege someone else may be right. That lady most likely came straight from the trailer park and went right back (after stopping at Walmart).

Eh I remember reading somewhere that fishkeeping was a hobby that was without ignorant before commericalim and consumerism took roots. I bet if people didn't buy into the "goldfish in a bowl" idea, then we would not have the ignorance that is being generated today.

Kinda like how iguanas ruined the general knowledge about herpkeeping.

A little off topic but...... Are you married?

The argument you described in the classic husband - wife disconnect:

- Men typically charge forward arguing only the facts, ignoring the pain, and using the facts to put the blame on the women (Problem was caused by high amonia, nitrates, whenever. As a fish keeper you should know that.)

- Women typically lead with the emotional outcome and want the man to acknowledge the pain first then accept the blame (I bought these fish from you and watched them die a horrible death; why didn't you tell me about the water before I brought them home to die)

Best thing to do in this case is what you did; stay out of it.

Emotion vs Fact
Venus vs Mars

So she can get a NASCAR sticker to put on her aquarium. Perfect!

I have worked at an lfs, seen it all. I have been there for 4 months! I have tested for pH that read at the bottom of the chart and at the top, I have seen Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate at the tip of the scale. One customer wanted a refund on a tang and he had 100 ppm nitrate. Customers ask all the time which fish will clean my glass, which fish will eat the crap on the bottom so I don't have to clean it. Let's face it, the average fishkeeper shouldn't own pets, shouldn't have kids. These people want to keep fish in a tank and just throw food in when they feel like it, and that's about it. Just like keeping a dog in a closet and dumping food in there, then shutting the door.

hey ewurm i got you beat by a year! (derail) i also get to deal with this sorta stuff all the time

Should it go as far as the respective department specialist having the authority to deny the sale of an animal?
One of the many reasons to come to Canada. I don't know about the States but in Canada stores reserve the right to refuse service to people. Its cool. Personally, I worked at the Future-Shop and got people that were like 'So and so is having a wedding/grad/ major event' and they would be like 'could I just return it after?' because we had a 14 day return policy. I told a few people no. I've also had friends that have worked at petland and petsmart and they have, on multiple occasions told a customer no. Like when people buy an aquarium setup and want to buy fish the people I know just refuse to sell them any fish with it. They have lost some pretty huge deals because of that. (Some guy wanted to buy a 300 gallon aquarium fully stocked with new world cichlids and put up a big stink)
But yeah... definitely come to Canada :headbang2
