What Sand Is Best?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i'd go with pool filter it can come in white or a natural tan color. i also heard its easier to rinse and won't get caught in filters as much as play

interesed to see the answers. want to add some sand to my gravel so it looks more natural
how do yall syphon without gettin sand?

i don't know the brands but pool filter sand is pool filter sand i would think nothing different

Ive been doing a lot of research on this for my 125 gallon.
As far as I can tell, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but the difference between pool filter sand and play sand is that the pfs is cleaner, as it is designed to be used with water in a pool where humans will be swimming, while play sand is still clean, but just not as much.
As far as brands, the three I have heard people have most success with is Aqua Quartz from ACE hardware, the house brand of Home Depot, and with Leslie's pool supply pfs.
And pool filter sand is not pool filter sand, color will vary from brand to brand, and maybe even from batch to batch.

i just setup a geo tank and used home depot play sand,i am very pleased with the results, rinsed easy and settled fast, will post pics when i get home from work

Yes, you will find many people that have luck with play sand as well. If you go with play sand, definitely rinse it, to be on the safe side. I have heard of many people not rinsing pfs, but it would probably be best to rinse it as well.

My logic is: shouldn't I start with the cleanest sand anyway? If they are the same price... why not?

Anyway, some people will tell you not to use sand at all (see the substrate sticky in this forum), some people will tell you sand is great, some people will tell you pfs, or play sand, or only expensive aquarium sand can be used. Of course, somebody has to be wrong.
At some point, you will just have to take a leap of faith and try it out, then report back to us and tell us how it went! :naughty:
