what sand should i use????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i use pool filter sand. It doesnt require much rinsing and doesnt murk up the water during cleanings. I wouldnt have fish in the tank during the switch. Just my .02.

I am going to use 3m colorquartz t-grade black sand in my 300 gallon.
My dad is an accountant for a pool making company and they have
an insane collection of different colors and what not. I'm picking it up tomorrow.

I HIGHLY recommend 3M colorquartz. In fact, I just picked up some more today. As long as you give it a good washing, you shouldn't have any problems putting it in with fish in there, but it is better without. I just put it in my tank and just used a cup to scoop the sand out of a bucket, dunk the cup in, bring it to the bottom and dump the sand out...wasn't cloudy at all. It's ceramic coated so the only dirt it should make is dust from sitting.

I have bought the following and these are the appx prices for what I've bought (all 50 lb. bags):
red s-grade - $20
black t-grade - $22
tan s-grade - $19

i also asked about plum s-grade and it was $28 a bag

where do u get this stuff
I just edited my post with a link to find a distributor

Thanks for the link man, if/when I upgrade I want to get some of this.

Right now I use PFS from a local pool shop. $8 a 50lb bag. It needs to be rinsed but it's not bad, I've heard the stuff from Lowe's and HD is dirtier. I wouldn't add it with fish either, but I suppose you could do it. For a 55G one 50lb bag should be more than fine.
