What Sand Substrate should i get

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how do most of you current sand users clean/vacumn your sand substrate tanks?

also another question or two while we are on the subject. Feasible (other than price) to use saltwater meant sand? Anyone mix substrate (like part gravel/part sand)?

3M Colorquartz. You can basically choose between any color or combination of colors and between 2 sizes.
I myself got the black S-grade; 50 lbs. bag x 5 for $17.70 each. Got if from a pool builder supply company. Most who sell them do not sell directly to the public, but they will if you are just getting a couple of bags.
Even this black is pretty clean. 10 minutes of running water and it is clean. It is heavier than sand so it sinks quickly with no floating particles.
The S-grade is uniformly shaped and compacts nicely. The T-grade is bigger than sand, but much smaller than gravel with irregular shapes.

Just hold you vacuum 1/2" above the sand when cleaning. You will barely loose any sand...if any. I bought mine at ace hardware. I love it!

Tahitan Moon Sand  lol, jk its hella expensive... pool filter sand is the way to go

20 grade pool filter sand

best there is
clean it in a 5 gallon bucket till water is clear and just dump it in your tank

to clean it hold your gravel vac about 1/2" away and to clean under neath it you can sorta clamp your gravel vac so it sucks up but really slowly
