I believe the slim coat peeling is ammonia burn. Don't quote me on that read about it someone here can correct me if I'm wrong. You need to do daily water changes until your nitrates are low. Honestly you need a sump and a new tank for the fish. Not trying so insult you at all just being very honest. You did have another thread where a sump was going to be heavy for your wood floors. Honestly that is not the case a sump is another tank and its half full anyways. More media more BB so your Mammon can be swimming around fine.
