Hello MFK family. I am looking for a new species to work with. I have certain criteria but would welcome some opinions and experiences from you. I have experience breeding several types of N American crayfish, Mexican dwarf orange crays, dwarf shrimp, mouth brooding cichlids, live bearers etc. I am not afraid of a challenge but do not have time for 3x per day water changes. I would like the maximum tank size of 48x12in please.

The primary reason for this project is to EARN MONEY! I would like to breed something people want and are willing to pay for. I would probably select a less valuable species if I was just in love with it but I tend to like all aquatic animals so value is a factor.

This is brain storming, there are no bad ideas.

Discus

Zebra plecos or discus

Triple red apistogramma agassizi.

It's funny you would mention those. I actually tried to breed them a few years ago, unsucessfully. I have learned a lot since then. Maybe I should give it another try.

I have given serious thought to zebra plecos. Does anyone have experience with them?

They are sexually mature at 4", buy a group of juveniles and let them pair off.

Zebra Plecos are beautiful, but really hard to breed. Another thing to consider since you're wanting to profit from this project is a more popular strain of fish like others have suggested. Breeding expensive fish isn't going to generate you the same money than a popular less expensive fish. I would breed tetras if I was looking for a profit.

Best wishes on this project. I look forward to seeing what you decide on.

Go with super red BN plecos or Green dragon Longfins. These are pretty hot at the moment.. they breed like hamsters, can handle all types of water conditions and parameters....and all you really need is a nice source of veggies for them as food. I have gone as far as blanched zuccinnis, cucumbers, green beans, peas, lettuce, spinach, etc....and a clay tube. If you not have a clay tube a clay saucer pan works as well. Just crack an "A" on it and your good to go...
