what should i do for my dovii

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I hear you. 150 gallons is plenty big for these fish now...the tank now absolutely dwarfs them. But hopefully I can get a larger tank...Thanks for having my back mudfrog!

I was speaking in terms of the lifetime of the fish. Being that all the fish in your 150 are still small, and they are all slow growing species, it's fine for some time. It won't be fine when they are all mature.

But seriously, you do need a divider for now.

Thanks!

And don't listen to the people on here who tell you a 150 isn't big enough for your dovii.. In 3-4 years it might not be big enough but it's plenty big for quite a while. I guess people just like jumping on the "your tank is too small" bandwagon, makes them feel warm and special.

A 150g is fine for a pair of dovii for quite a while, sure. But in his case, his 150g is obviously not large enough for a pair of dovii and tankmates. It's not a bandwagon, it's just the cold hard unfortunate truth.

Gizmo, you're going to probably have to give up on the grammodes or have to move it to another tank. Dovii have pretty high conspecific aggression and a fish like a grammodes that looks somewhat similar will be in trouble when housed with them.

Or you can temporarily divide the tank to save the grammodes. And save that divider to eventually save the female dovii. If you're having problems between the pair now, that's probably going to get worse down the road. The female dovii is probably hounded by the male when she does come out for food.

It's pretty easy to make dovii proof full or partial dividers. Eggcrate, 1-1.5" potable water PVC pipe, table saw with a dado blade, chop saw, drill and good suction cups. With access to that hardware, it takes 15mins to make very strong dividers (actually 2-3 sets!). Anyone that keeps more than a single large growing CA cichlid in a tank SHOULD already have dividers on hand anyways!

Thanks for the information DarthV I was planning on giving the grammode away I just feel bad for the poor guy. And I will also make a divider if I can't find a suitable home for him. The female dovii doesn't get picked on at all by the male which is weird and they have never locked jaws or flared up with each other she is very timid which could possibly be a sign that she is intimidated by him. But I will take your advice and go to work. Thanks everyone
