So about a year ago I had a flourishing 180-gallon tank full of beautiful, vibrant cichlids. I absolutely loved my arrangement, but felt like I needed to move on to something else. Perhaps something more challenging. So I gave all of my cichlids to a coworker whose husband is very experienced with fish.

I took on a new challenge: Shrimp. I bought hundreds of shrimp, mostly high rated red crystal shrimp, as well as a few other kinds. I had everything perfect before they went in, I had grass grown and plants in the tank, and a school of 100 neon tetras in there too. It looked spectacular. And then in March something happened. I still do not know what happened, but the shrimp started to die off slowly. And the casualties started to pick up. The parameters were fine, and the tetras were fine, but the shrimp kept dying. Eventually, I only found about 30 shrimp, sold them, along with the tetras, and pulled the plug on the tank. I was not happy about losing my shrimp, and I didn't really want to put all the effort into the tank to make it look as good as it once did.

So I decided to sell the tank. I was selling my 180-gallon tank along with the matching 30-gallon tank with all accessories for $400. I had one person interested and I was pretty sure that they would buy it. They came and looked at them and made an offer. $200. I did not want to sell it for $400, let alone $200. I just didn't want it sitting in the corner wasting room. However, I wasn't going to give it away.

Today I went to the local fish store. No reason, I was just in the area. Turns out, they have some pretty neat new fish. It got me thinking of what I could do with my tank. Now, I'm thinking about setting it back up and seeing what I can do with it.

Here are my questions:

1) What should I do? Should I look into selling the tanks again or should I set them back up?

2) Assuming I set them back up, what should I put in them?

i second the planted tank idea.

that stinks about the shrimp though, maybe they werent able to molt or something? or two much inbreeding before you got them? total shrimp newbie tossing ideas out there..

I third the planted tank.

I would say Go biotope. Pick fish all from the same area ... or if ye really want to take it slow ... Pick one river. Make the tank really work :)

The planted idea sounds really nice. But i was thinking you could maby have an african cichlid tank, the fish are awsomely coloured. However they are aggressive so maby a planted tank with SA/CA cichlids for example large angels, convicts and firemouth cichlids :)

the thing about a planted tank with african cichlids is that they eat and tear plants up,
also most plants will wither away in the high ph needed to keep cichlids...

I doubt anyone here would suggest selling a tank unless it meant you'd be getting a bigger one, haha.

All I know is that if it were me I'd definitely be refilling it with *something*.

a planted discus tank would be awesome
