HELP!!! my friend who is 14, like me, has a 12 gallon biocube. he had it up and running with a 3" rainbow shark, a bristlenose pleco and a bunch of guppies, (he had more fish but they died off over time). I was giving my friend information about fish because i am addicted to fish keeping, i did and still am doing a bunch of research, i have 2 tanks set up, a 125 with arowana, eartheaters, uaru, and some plecos, and a 20 gallon discus tank. so anyway, my friend told me yesterday that he was doing a 50-75% waterchange at least every three weeks!!! he also told me he washed out ALL of the filter media including the BACTERIA!!! i told him he should be doing maybe a 25% water change every week or so, and not to rise out the bacteria. he said ok. so today he called and told me that he cleaned out his tank yesterday and supposenly put decholinated water back into the tank and two hours later all of his fish were dead. even the pleco.

he then told me that today he went to a fish store and bought new fish. i dont even know if he changed the water again before he bought new fish. and guess what fish he bought, three fish i dont know what kind, but then two bgk.... all this week ive been telling him that he can only get fish that are small (because i dont want him to get fish that get huge only to have them die) so i told him just a little while ago that the bgk get about 1 1/2 to 2 feet and he said "Ya i know" all happyish... that just made me mad... but i said o well.

so i told my mom, she seemed upset because she hates to see/hear anything die and she doesnt want animals to die. then my mom told me that my friend's (same friend above^) mom called my mom a long time ago and said that i knew too much and that i was telling my friend what to do.... (when i heard this i was mad as heck all i was trying to do was to inform my friend what he can and cannot get because of size, hardiness, etc.) and then my friends mom said that i just need to let other people learn things on their own...... and i was like ***k that i dont want any fish to die because of my careless friend. god i wish my friend wasnt so spoiled.

what should i do, i dont want this to ruin my friendship with this friend, but i dont want any fish to die!

let him do his own thing. it sucks, but you can't force anyone to do anything they don't want to do. I wouldn't let this get in the way of your friendship. hopefully (when all his fish die again), he'll maybe ask you for some guidance.

anyway, it sounds like your advice is unsolicited and unwelcome, so the appropriate thing to do is save it.

Afraid i have to agree.

A friend of mine has a 1 gallon tank and has often asked me for advice.

Same answer every time.

BIGGER TANK :D

One thing, and i'm pretty sure this comes with age, is that you learn that some things become dependent on you. Your mate will get this soon enough.

I had a friend who also used to keep fish, but was incredibly bad at it. (dont know how, just didn't have the knack i guess) and he would constantly go for bigger, meaner fish. was never easy seeing fish being beaten up on a daily basis.

Eventually he lost interest, the fish died and the tanks went into storage.

A shame, but sometimes its for the best that people lose interest.

One last thing. if his BGK die, then im sure hell feel it in his pocket. those things are not cheap.

You and your friend are both young. try not to fall out over this, just keep your opinions to yourself, let his hobby run its course, and make sure your tanks are always in pristine condition. easier said then done eh?

Craggy

I'd say just try and avoid the topic of fishkeeping altogether. It's unfortunate that he won't listen, but the topic will just end up making both of you mad, so just avoid it entirely if you want to continue the friendship.

Exactly, you try to educate the person and point them towards good resources, like mfk, and if they don't learn, you at least tried your best

lol my friend saw a tank with some freshwater stingrays in it and he loved em so he wants to get em
he has asked me 4 or 5 times if he can just get a lil bowl and put one in it? :nilly:
im like yaaaa..... um not gonna work :nilly::screwy:

My sister has a bala shark ina 10 gallon tank, I love these fish, but know advice is often unwelcome. My way of giveing advise was just a one time statment I said "Hey thats a nice fish, he will get 12 + inches long" she said no he will only grow to the size of the tank, so I left it at that. I love fish and like to see them well cared for, but at the end of the day they are just fish and not worth an argument, plus I have made my own mistakes.
