you should come up to it and just sit there untill it comes out.that how the fish got use to you.that is what i do to my flowerhorn fry lol.i scare them at first but then i got use to it.or your decoration is scaring the fish some how.
 
its different w/ every FH. my first one i got, almost right away he was attacking my finger no matter what. The new one I have, he's a bit more reserved but will finger chase if you piss him off ;)
 
My community tank in my bedroom has all of the bashfull fish. They still scramble today when I get out of bed or walk into the room.

What I always do is get in there and just sit in front of the tank. Now, it's finally to the point that some of them are going to the top for feeding time.

It will work you just gotta commit the time....
