Third rock from the sun
A friend of mine has a florida gar in a 72 bowfront tank. He has had this since way before i got into monster fish keepers. So i had no idea that that is a bad idea, otherwise i would have told him before he bought it. But now i think it is around 5 years old and about 16'' long, and i think it has been stunted. Now he is selling it to make room for restocking his tank, and wanted to know if i wanted it. I'm wondering if it is stunted enough to live in my 75, or if it is put into a larger tank it will keep growing... So if that is the case I will buy it off of him and sell it in the Marketplace or sell it back to the lfs for some store credit. If that is not the case then I will keep it in my 75. Please no trolling i am trying to do the right thing for this fish.

a florida would do good in a 150 or 180 for a while. i would get it and put it into a larger tank. you also could always build a pond for it too if you preferred. i am currently rasing up six longnose and already am planning the next tanks or growouts for them.

It should start growing again if given the proper conditions including a larger aquarium, proper temperatures, & enough food.

I have to disagree Ryan, if the age is accurate I wouldn't be expecting any noticable growth from the fish. I would still recommend getting a larger aquarium for it domething in the 24" wide range.

I was more implying that another inch or two is possible; I doubt that it will get to be any bigger than 18" though.

i agree. at 5 years that fish isn't going to grow anymore...at least not noticeably in all likelihood. maybe an inch or two over a long time (several years), but even that is highly doubtful.--

Yes get him and give him a larger tank. Even if he does not get any larger you will still enjoy him, not to mention you will be giving him a better life.
